Comfort, Choice, and Restoring Agency

  • Recognize that loss of agency during seclusion is itself a driver of escalation, and restoring choices is a clinical intervention.

  • During seclusion, offer small choices such as food preferences, blankets, personal hygiene items, and light levels as a concrete way to restore a sense of comfort during and after seclusion.

  • Communicate clearly who you are and when you will return to see them in the room. Do your best to honour that commitment.
