Patient Orientation
-
Take time to clearly introduce yourself and your role as patients are admitted to the unit, as well as all other health care providers that may be involved in their care (mental health workers, security personnel, social workers).

-
Offer unit tours and welcome materials that explain the seclusion room and what patients might expect if seclusion is used, for themselves and others on the unit (show photos of what the inside of a seclusion room looks like, if relevant).

-
Ask about preferences, likes, and dislikes upon admission, document and share with the team.

-
Discuss the unit’s approach to seclusion early – not only after an incident.
